Team Returns from Successful Winter Trip Fri 01/09/04

Eighteen members of the team returned to Pittsburgh today after a successful trip to Columbia, South Carolina. Although at times it was a bit chilly, the team spent long hours on the Broad River working on basic technique and fitness in small boats. There was a lot of excitement to return to the water, and everyone on the trip had a blast. On Wednesday the team will return indoors to continue preperation for the Pittsburgh Indoor Sprints and the Spring season.

2004 Pittsburgh Indoor Erg Sprints Sun 02/08/04

Congtatulations to all of our team members who competed at this year's indoor ergo sprints!!!

In addition to tying for 2nd place in overall Team Points, there were many individual personal records pulled today.

The coaches were especially proud of the teamwork exhibited by the novice and varsity rowers together, in what is largely an indivualized competition. Varsity helped to guide novice rowers where the novice cheered on the varsity competitors.

Well Done!!

Coach Donald Webber-Plank

CRASH-B's World Indoor Rowing Championsh Wed 02/25/04

Congrats to Steph Busi, Kimmy Berman and Katie Benitende who all raced @ CRASHB’s this past Sunday (2/22/04) in Boston, MA.

Both Kim and Katie had best times with Steph just a touch off of hers.

I am very proud of them for making the road trip and risking to race at what appears such a big event. But they did it and did very well and also realized what is possible, despite having nervous anxieties.

In addition, the women enjoyed great visits with Kim's parents and Katie's grandparents along the way!!! Thank you to both.

Here are a few photos for those interested. More to come soon (our first race is in under three weeks).

Murphy Cup 04' Resutls Sun 03/28/04

Murphy Cup

March 27, 2004; The Schuylkill River, Philadelphia, PA

Our team, Carnegie Mellon Crew, posted a strong start to the 2004 sprint season on the Schuylkill River in Philadelphia.

Many thanks to all the parents who came out in support of their kids and the team. Those parents include the Feigenbaum’s, Samuels’, Berman’s, Bullen’s and Mackay’s. They brought well received support, and of course, food and refreshment.

Thank you also to the Ferguson’s, Heller’s and Samuels for opening their homes for the team to stay Friday evening!!!

Conditions for the day included flat water with medium current and variety of temperatures including some early rain, and mild sun throughout the afternoon.

I am very pleased to see our strong efforts over winter conditioning and spring training resulting in strong race performances. The team performed well for their first race of the season, and for some of the novice rowers, their first race ever.

The regatta provided an opportunity for the team to orientate, visualize and race on the Dad Vail course. In six short weeks we will return for the National Championships. Also, the regatta provided the team an opportunity to compete in a regatta with heats qualifying to finals. This format is important for both our regional @ Mid-Atlantic Collegiate Crew Championship and for the Dad Vails.

We accomplished these goals, and for that I am very proud of the team. All enjoyed a great day of racing.

Head Coach Donald Webber-Plank

Next week the team races in Indianapolis, IN at a regatta of clubs who are all of universities in the University Athletic Association. Where different universities prohibit the regatta from using UAA affiliation in any way due to club status of the crew programs, it is important to note that this is the first time that such a regatta has been organized. (as a side note, Carnegie Mellon Crew is very fortunate to have excellent support of their efforts and initiatives from the Athletic Department and Athletic Director John Harvey and Asst. Athletic Director Joan Maser)

Entrants include: Carnegie Mellon Univ., Case Western Reserve Univ., Emory Univ., New York Univ.(maybe), Univ. of Chicago, Univ. of Rochester and Washington Univ. in St. Louis. Brandeis is unable to attend.

Notable results from Murphy Cup include the following:

First place, Men’s Varsity 2-. Final only.

Stroke Gary Feigenbaum (junior) and bow Paul Harvin (senior) survived a strong sprint from La Salle, to lay claim to their 1st place finish and a very shiny gold medal!

Coming through the Strawberry Mansion Bridge at approximately 650 meters, the pair had an excellent course and strong rhythm that brought them through the 1000m in a commanding lead over the field. Where there were some rhythm changes in the third 500 that brought the field in tighter, both Gary and Paul made adjustments to finish with a strong sprint and bring home the Tartan’s only victory of the day.

Varsity 2:

La Salle

7:31.19

Stony Brook

7:56.61

Duquesne

8:00.39

Pitt

8:05.18

Penn State

8:17.01

Third Place, Women’s Varsity Lightweight 4+. Qualified third from their heat to the final.

Coxwain Laura Vallaincourt (senior), stroke Vanessa Gerber (senior), three seat Audria Stubna (grad student), two seat Katie Benintende (freshman) and Emily Mackay (junior) put a strong effort down the race course. With a wide range of experience in the boat, they had the opportunity to take home many valuable lessons. The race was very tight down the course with Villanova and Temple holding the lead through 1000m and Carnegie Mellon in tight contention with Bryn Mawr and Stony Brook. However, in the last 500m Carnegie Mellon pushed strong to close the gap on the leaders and come within :0.55 of Temple.

The final also had the Lady Tartans closing their time gap of 12 seconds in the heat to just 3.6 seconds from winner Villanova - while finishing 4 seconds in front of Bryn Mawr who bested them by a second in the heat.

Varsity LtWt 4:

Villanova

7:47.0

Temple

7:50.12

Car. Mellon

7:50.67

Bryn Mawr

7:54.46

Stony Brook

8:22.28

8:26.1

Second Place, Men’s Varsity Lightweight 8+. Final only

Coxswain Jared Deible (junior), stroke Jon Milikowski (junior), seven seat Ben Ledewitz (senior), six seat Bram Whillock (junior), five seat David Rice (sophomore), four seat Bucky Ferozan (senior), three seat Lenny Lucas (senior), two seat Cinar Sahin (freshman) and bow Neil Turbow (senior).

An excellent effort by the men’s light 8+. With St. Joe’s a perennial Dad Vail finalist, the lightweight Tartans had their work cut out for them. They pulled strong to gain a lead on Penn State and did well to open up their distance and not be satisfied with simply staying out in front.

Varsity LtWt 8:

St. Joe's

6:14.70

Car. Mellon

6:32.44

Penn State

6:46.60

Fourth Place, Women’s Varsity Division II/III 8+. Final only

Coxswain Eva Goellner (sophomore), stroke Stephanie Busi (junior), seven seat Darbi Roberts (junior), six seat Vanessa Gerber (senior), five seat Georgia Bullen (sophomore), four seat Maura Ferguson (freshman), three seat Audria Stubna (grad), two seat Katie Benintende (freshman), bow Kim Berman (sophomore). This lineup was a mixture of open women and lightweight women.

Bryn Mawr 7:05.7

Stonybrook 7:10.77

Dowling 7:13.94

Carnegie Mellon 7:20.73

Genesco 7:28.22

Penn State 7:33.85

Other entries that raced in the heats but failed to qualify to the finals:

Men’s Varsity 4+ (this was rowed by the men’s “A” lightweight 4+); this was a satisfying race for the men beating both Duquesne and UPitt who had lightweight entries as well. Cross-bay rivalry is always exciting, especially when you are able to come out on top.

Women’s Varsity 4+; the women showed their strongest performance as a group to date with their training, incorporating many elements of their practice into the race down the course.

Women’s Novice 8+; where there were a couple of rowers in the boat that just started with the team this past winter, I was very pleased to see the progress that the women had made over spring training in South Carolina, translate to their race down the course.

Men’s Novice 4+; Inexperience in the boat, with only two rowers that were able to go to spring training, left the men lacking the speed they needed to compete for the finals. However, with consistent practice there exists the potential for some speed from the men.

Men’s Varsity Heavyweight 8+; 3rd of six entries; this lineup was a mixture of our three heavyweights and primarily “B” lightweight men. This race was very exciting due to the very strong final 500m that brought the team into third place in front of Duquesne and American Univ.

 Boat Christening 4-17-2004 Fri 04/09/04

The Carnegie Mellon University Rowing Club has chosen to honor Dr. John Harvey, the Director of Athletics and Physical Education, with the christening of our new four man shell. John Harvey has dedicated fifteen years of his life to the University and its pursuit of athletic excellence. During this time Carnegie Mellon athletics have flourished both nationally and in the University Athletic Association. Despite the fact that crew is not a varsity sport, Dr. Harvey has repeatedly has gone out of his way to support the rowing club and he always recognized our oarsman and women as true athletes. Currently, Dr. Harvey is serving as the team's representative on the board of directors at Three Rivers Rowing Association and we are grateful for his support in this manner.

In light of his dedication and hard work for both the University and our team, we have chosen to name this shell "Dr. John Harvey." A boat christening ceremony will take place on April 17th at 2 PM on The Cut outside of the University Center. All are invited to attend.

 Flood! Tue 09/21/04

Hurricane Ivan hit Pittsburgh hard this past Friday causing the Allegheny to rise well above its banks. Fortunately, we had the majority of our boats with us while racing in Cleveland, but that didn't stop it from leaving our bay a mess. The flood peaked with about 8 feet of water in our bay.

Head of the Charles Regatta '04 Tue 10/26/04

40th Head of the Charles Regatta, October 23-24, 2004.

Carnegie Mellon Crew rowed to excellent results and club history this past weekend on the Charles River. The Head of the Charles is the world's largest two-day regatta in Boston, Massachusetts.

Results

Sixth place w/ 43 entries- CMU Men's Club Four (event 2M).

Seventh place w/15 entries - CMU Women's Lightweight Four (event 20F).

Seventh place w/37 entries – CMU Assistant Coach Susannah Walker, rowing 6 seat with TRRA Masters Women’s team, in Women’s Club Eight (event 1F).

Coach’s Analysis

Four (4) entries for HOC ’05:

Due to both crew’s finishing within 5% of their respective event winning times, I am pleased with the momentum our team continues to gain for the future ahead! Carnegie Mellon will be able to field two women’s team and two men’s team entries for Head of the Charles 2005 (see “entry & registration protocol” below for historical reference and logistics). This allows for an even greater portion of our team to look forward to an exciting and fun Fall ’05 regatta season.

Improved starting positions for 2005:

Additionally, our automatic entries allow for greatly improved starting positions in next year’s regatta- at the very least in 2005, the men will begin 6th and the women 7th due to this year’s placing.

It is ideal for crews to start as near to the front of the field as possible. This allows for the crew to race a course with clearer vision ahead as well as an increased possibly steering the shortest distance without having to row behind or having to pass slower crews. Additional and precious time can be added when a crew has to alter one’s course to pass others or when rowing in “dirty water” created from the oar blade puddles of another crew ahead. Our starting position with this year’s field was 38th and 12th for the men and women respectively. Of course it is important to remember that we cannot forgo training and technique to back up our previous performances!

Strong freshman contributions:

Each crew had strong contributions from freshman teammates who both happen to matriculate from local Pittsburgh high school rowing programs.

On the men’s side, Greg Collins (Central Catholic HS, ’04) joined Gary Feigenbaum (senior), Justin Samuels (senior), Adam Suhy (sophomore) and coxswain Jared Deible (senior).

For the women’s lightweight crew, Andrea Zin (Ellis School, ’04) joined Emily Mackay (senior), Audria Stubna (senior) and Sarah Crosskey (sophomore).

Alumni Gathering

Also of note was the fantastic alumni support organized by Elizabeth Gross (’90).

Elizabeth (who is nothing short of an amazing and talented woman of organizational energy) organized a CMU alumni/parents gathering spot just down river from the Weeks Footbridge on the Cambridge side. She also provided many good stories from the first years our team was in existence back in 1987, including beginning “Tartan forays” into Head of the Charles Regatta competition. That year, a rudder broke on the men’s boat during the race. The coxswain was only able to steer by using his/her leg over the side of the boat. Evidently, walking the next day was next to impossible due to extreme soreness! And the women’s lightweight 8+ crew, despite losing 50 pounds collectively, was just barely unable to make the weight average necessary and therefore was disqualified. Fortunately time heals all wounds as well as giving perspective for good rememberances. And it is the process and experience shared by all, that bonds are formed over time whereby we continue to participate in Tartan Crew.

Thank you Elizabeth! We really appreciate all that you did for us this year. It was incredible for the team to share in the support that was given foundation through your time and resource.

Along with the camaraderie of our riverside “oasis” was our Tartan Crew Parents “Feed and Fuel Program”, chaired with the generous help of Debra and Leon Feigenbaum (parents of current rower, Gary). We also saw the Crosskey and Mackay families.

Erin Breen (’03) was there with her bagpipes giving plenty of good vibes to our crews as they raced along on the water! Also in attendance were Jeffrey Beene (’00), Laura Miyakawa (’01), Neil Stroup (’02), Liz Pino (’02), Vanessa Gerber (’04), Paul Harvin (’04), Paul Raff (’04) and Dan Millner (’04) among others.

It was fantastic also meet so many additional non-rowing CMU alumni who were very enthusiastic towards our crew team’s efforts. There were many generous offers for future help with dinners and of floors to sleep on and places to stay.

With Special Thanks

Just as in successfully rowing a shell down the course, our team is able to compete because of the generosity of resources and spirit we receive from others.

Thank you again to Elizabeth Gross.

Thank you to alumni Neil Stroup, Jeffrey Beene & Laura Miyakawa for opening up their homes, beds and yes…floors, for the team to stay. Their generosity allows the team to afford regattas such as these.

Thank you, again, to the Feigenbaum’s for hosting the team at their home in New York on Thursday evening as they traveled to Boston from Pittsburgh.

We also received assistance from my good friends Ed (’90) & Laura Tiedge for allowing me and the trailer to stay at their home in Pelham, NY along the way. Also thank you to my good friend and past training partner, Peter and Shannon Olrich for allowing me and Woody (our team Chesapeake Bay Retriever) to stay at their home in North Andover, MA over the course of the regatta.

A tremendous amount of thanks goes to Megan Kuehm for the incredibly generous use of her truck that we used to pull the trailer. Megan rows for the TRRA Masters Women’s team that I coach. Where we generally rent a towing vehicle for trailer travel, Megan’s generosity cut our expenses enormously!!!

Entry & Registration Protocol

To the best of my knowledge, the team also made club history with both the women and men's finishing times within 5% of that of the winning time of their respective events. (Women-4.07%, men-4.46%)

Crews that finish within 5% of the winning times, gain an automatic entry into the following year's regatta. This entry is in addition to the single guaranteed "organizational entry" each club receives in the event lottery system.

In the past, the Crew Team has had one organizational entry (Carnegie Mellon) which switched from men’s team to the women’s team each year. This is the first year (2004 regatta) that we were able to pay for two (Carnegie Mellon & Carnegie Mellon-Women) organizational entries.
